Promoting the Computational Science Initiative for High Schoolers or “ProCSI-H” (pronounced “proxy-H”) , is a free, residential, summer program hosted at the University of Wisconsin-Madison.
This program is tailored to offer students a glimpse into the world of computer science and various engineering disciplines. Students will get the unique opportunity to explore revolutionary research labs and attend enlightening seminars hosted by professors and graduate students. Additionally, students will investigate introductory college-level engineering concepts through engaging hands on activities.
Spanning six days, the program offers ample time for students to immerse themselves in college life and foster connections with like-minded peers. Overall, ProCSI-H aims to inspire students by offering a sneak peek into the discoveries and innovations within the world of engineering.
Here at SBEL, we value diversity. Thus, we strongly encourage individuals from STEM-underrepresented groups, including females, minorities, and first-generation students, to apply for this enriching opportunity. No prior experience is required.

FAQ
(Frequently Asked Questions)

My child was accepted into the program, but my other child doesn't have any summer plans. Could they attend the camp with their sibling?
Unfortunately, we cannot admit students who didn’t apply as that would be unfair to those who submitted an application prior to the deadline.
Additionally, we cannot offer students who didn’t apply a spot on our program’s waitlist as that would also be unfair. Any spots that open up in our program will only be offered to students who have submitted an application prior to the deadline.
Overall, our team strives to maintain fairness and professionalism in all of our decisions.
How much experience is required to participate?
There are no prerequisites for the program! The only requirement is that the student must presently be in the 9th, 10th, or 11th grade and have an interest in learning more about engineering and computer science.
I am concerned that I do not have enough background to participate. Should I still apply?
Absolutely! The program is crafted to cater to students who have minimal or no prior exposure to engineering and computer science.
How much does the program cost?
The program is free! Meals and housing are covered by the program. Unfortunately, we are unable to assist with travel expenses.
I am currently a senior, can I still participate?
Unfortunately, current seniors are ineligible to participate. Students who will graduate before the program takes place are no longer considered to be high school students at the time of the program.
Who should write my letter of recommendation?
Your letter of recommendation should be provided by someone whom you trust to effectively advocate for your candidacy. This could be a teacher, counselor, mentor, community leader, or a similar figure. However, your recommender must not have any familial relationship with you, as applications with such references will not be taken into consideration.
Are there any specific requirements for the letter of recommendation?
There are no specific requirements for the letter of recommendation. We simply request that the recommender provides insight into your qualities as both a student and an individual, and can advocate for your candidacy
I was accepted into the program but live in the Madison area, can I commute?
This program also aims to provide students with a glimpse into the college experience and an opportunity for them to create new friendships with their peers. This is most effective when students stay in the dorms and participate in the full program. Consequently, we encourage students to not commute.
When are decisions released?
ProCSI-H is mainly operated by undergraduate and graduate students at the University of Wisconsin-Madison. The decision timeline is contingent on their schedules and the volume of applications received. Our team endeavors to process applications promptly, generally within two weeks of the deadline.
How many students are accepted?
We host 20 students per week. In 2023, our program expanded to accommodate two sessions, therefore we anticipate to accept 40 students.
How are the dorms arranged?
The wing will be divided by gender, with one residential counselor of the corresponding gender assigned to each side. Students should anticipate sharing living quarters with one other person. In the case of an odd number of students of the same gender, efforts will be undertaken to accommodate an individual student. Per university regulations, we are not allowed to place more than two students per room.
What will the program schedule look like?
We are unable to release the program schedule before the program takes place. While we aim to maintain general consistency in terms of meals and activities, please note that tours are subject to change.
If you want an idea of what our program schedule looks like, please visit some of the webpages for past years under the header “Want to See More? Look at Past ProCSI-H Years!” on this page.
